Nietzsche on Reason

The Gay Science 3

Common people can't perceive of actions a reason or advantage. Not to allow their instincts to perform inexpedient acts is their wisdom and pride. The higher or noble types let their instincts take over their reason just like an animal who will die defending its young.

One talks of passion. We are annoyed with someone who succumbs to the passion of the belly but understand the attraction that plays the tyrant in such cases.

It is hard to understand how anyone could risk his health and honour for the sake of knowledge. The taste of the higher type is for exceptions and they assume their own passion is present but kept concealed in all men.
